CSR in M&A: new trends and an innovative approach to reconciling profits with ethics
As globalisation develops more and more nowadays many companies involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) or other types of alliances and cooperation need to reconcile various business dilemmas they are confronted with in shaping common corporate cultures. One of them is about how to create corporate social responsibility (CSR) i.e. finding the right balance between conflicting interests such as profits (the raison d’être of a company) and ethical issues (child labour, environmental matters, sustainable development, etc.). The ability to reconcile both extremes will eventually determine the level of social responsibility the company will implement. As result, HR departments involved in M&A often need to find new definitions and applications for their global policies involving (new) values, codes of conducts and (best) practices. In this respect, success or failure to create and manage a high level of CSR will play an increasing role in determining the overall image of the company on the global scene. This image develops into a strong PR message that shareholders, suppliers, clients and customers are increasingly sensitive to assess.
After proposing some definitions and reviewing current trends in CSR policies and developments and their implications on organisational cultures, we will work on a real life case featuring such a dilemma. This will include trying to reconcile it by using the dilemma reconciliation theory as proposed by Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner. We will then evaluate the degree of CSR this new situation has created and propose recommendations.
This Atelier will be interactive and will also serve as a forum for an exchange of ideas and practices on CSR and comparable issues.
