Evaluating and Developing Intercultural Competence
Come and join us for a day of presentation and debate around the topic of intercultural competence, in association with Birkbeck College, University of London. Do we all share the same definition of intercultural competence? In what ways can it be evaluated? And what is the best approach to developing intercultural awareness and skills in our students and trainees?
Our keynote speakers are both well established experts in intercultural communication and education.
Dr Adrian Holliday: ‘A critical cosmopolitan approach to developing cultural awareness in an unequal world’
Adrian has a long and distinguished track record with many international organisations including the British Council. He has worked in educational management in several different countries including Syria and Egypt and is author of Intercultural Communication: an Advanced Resource Book. Professor of Applied Linguistics at Canterbury Christ Church University , his work explores how we can surmount the challenges of ‘cultural chauvinism’ by pursuing a non-essentialist approach to intercultural education.
Dr Mike Byram: ‘The challenges of assessing intercultural competence’ followed by a workshop presenting the ‘Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters’
Mike is Professor of Education at Durham University . He has carried out research into the education of linguistic minorities, foreign language education and student residence abroad, and has published many books and articles including Teaching and Assessing Intercultural Communicative Competence. He is the editor of the Routledge Encyclopedia of Language Teaching and Learning and is a Programme Adviser to the Council of Europe Language Policy Division.
